Winter weather road tips: Staying safe while navigating the snow and ice

CHICAGO ( WGN ) — Snowfall brings a whole bundle of headaches for drivers, but there are some steps that can be taken to avoid lingering issues or a potentially dangerous situation.

Each year, in the United States, 24% of weather-related vehicle crashes occur on snowy, slushy or icy pavement and 15% occur when snow or sleet is falling, according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Vehicle crashes on snowy, slushy, or icy pavement account for more than 1,300 deaths and more than 116,800 injuries annually, the FHWA said. Additionally, nearly 900 people are killed and nearly 76,000 people are injured in crashes that occur when snow or sleet is falling.
