Los Angeles Wildfires Spark Taxpayer Anger

Amidst the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, residents are questioning how their tax dollars are being used. Kristian Fors, a research fellow, says people are angry that their basic needs are not being met.

Government Mismanagement and Unmet Needs

Fors points to issues that could have been addressed to prevent the wildfires, such as fire-resistant construction, underground power lines, and controlled burns. He also highlights the housing crisis in California, which makes it difficult for displaced residents to find shelter.

Controversial Memorandum of Understanding

In 2020, Governor Newsom signed a memorandum of understanding to clear 500,000 acres of forest land annually, but only 100,000 acres have been cleared per year. Fors believes this has contributed to the wildfire threat.

Strong Winds Fuel Flames

LA County Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone warns that strong winds could worsen the fires. Over 7,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed in the Eaton Fire, while 5,316 structures have been destroyed in the Palisades Fire.
