Strong Quake Hits Southwest Mexico

Additional Coverage:

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck southwestern Mexico on Sunday. The epicenter was near Coalcoman de Vazquez Pallares, a town about 370 miles west of Mexico City.

The quake occurred at a depth of 53 miles. No immediate reports of casualties or damage were received. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that emergency services are monitoring the situation in Coalcoman.

Mexico is prone to earthquakes due to its location on multiple tectonic plates. In 1985, a devastating 8.1 magnitude quake caused widespread damage and loss of life in Mexico City. More recently, a 7.1 magnitude quake in 2017 claimed 369 lives.

In 2022, a 7.6 magnitude quake struck central Mexico just hours after an earthquake safety drill. The quake’s impact extended far north, causing unusual waves in a Death Valley cave.
