KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – With high pressure centered over Kansas this morning we are seeing clear skies and the coldest air for the work week. Morning low temperatures are expected between 0° and 5° and with a steady wind out of the west between 5 and 15 mph we anticipate feel-like temperatures to drop as low as -10°. Most major highways and interstates are reasonably clear of ice, however, there are some slick spots so be aware. And neighborhood streets and sidewalks are still scattered with ice for many. This could be especially hazardous to children heading back to school so make sure to give them a head’s up to watch where they step, bike, etc.,.
By this afternoon, mostly sunny skies are expected with afternoon high temperatures in the middle 20s, but feel-like temperatures are anticipated in the lower and middle teens. We will then rebuild cloud cover as a weak area of low pressure stretches across Nebraska providing a very small opportunity for a few flakes to fly overnight tonight into early Tuesday morning. This snowfall is not impactful and we do not anticipate any kind of accumulation that would be significant enough to alter your morning Tuesday. However, we will still carry through cold conditions with morning low temperatures near 10° and afternoon high temperatures in the low to middle 20s.
Once we push this weak weather system northeast, warmer air begins to build back into the Missouri River Valley. Upper 30s and lower 40s are expected Thursday and Friday, which will aid in melting some snow away. However, a new storm system is starting to brew for the weekend and we are watching it very closely as we have a major football game against the Texans at Arrowhead.
Right now our extended forecast models are split. One indicates light snowfall Saturday afternoon along I-70 and south and is expected to exit by the early evening while a second model indicates widespread snow as early as 6 a.m. Saturday through Sunday morning. If this particular model becomes more confident we may be looking at a significant accumulation on a day that could take us to the Super Bowl. We are not putting exceptional weight into this more aggressive forecast, but we are monitoring it moving through the next few days. At this time, we are expecting a 30% snow risk for Saturday with a 20% chance into Sunday morning. What is definitely going to occur is another drop in temperature with highs expected in the middle and upper 20s Saturday dropping to the middle teens by Sunday afternoon…
