Historic Knoxville fire truck back on display after 2022 crash into museum

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A historic fire truck is back on public display after an SUV crashed through Knoxville Fire Department’s museum in 2022.

On January 9, KFD moved it from storage to the new Public Safety Complex on Huron Street. The 1909 American LeFrance Metropolitan steam engine will become the focal point of the department’s museum, which will be fully open to the public soon.

“We had to get a wreck and we had to get a crew together to hand roll it out of the building,” said Mark Wilbanks with KFD. “We had to hand roll it off of the wrecker into this building uh it took a lot of people took a lot of time and effort. I think it went great. Things went very smoothly, very well. Of course, we were very careful not to damage it or anything like that.”

On May 8, 2022, a Jeep Grand Cherokee left W. Summit Hill Drive and crashed through the museum in the front yard of KFD’s headquarters station. The crash caused major damage to the building and the antique steamer on display outside of the station was placed in storage…
