Mountain lion sightings in Northern California prompt safety warning, road closures

(FOX40.COM) — A public safety warning has been issued after reports of mountain lion sightings in Northern California, according to the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said the sightings have been in the Upper Main Street area of Downieville. On Monday morning, one of three lions was killed while attacking a dog. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife responded and is actively investigating the situation.

“Out of an (abundance) of caution, the county park on Upper Main Street in Downieville will be closed until further notice,” SCSO said. “This includes the playground, tennis courts, and basketball court.”

Anyone in the area who sees a mountain lion can call SCSO at (530) 289-3700 or email [email protected]. Deputies asked the public, if possible, to include photographs or videos in the report to assist with the investigation.
