Angel in the outfield: Calvary softball begins to merge grief, drive for fifth straight state title

The unmistakable clap of the catcher’s glove after Kynzee Anderson delivered some heat, the ping of the bat as Carlie Guile one-hopped a ball off the fence, the encouragement of head coach Tiffany Wood – there was a lot about Monday’s softball practice at Calvary that was normal.

The outfield? Well, it was still stocked with plenty of Lady Cavaliers stars, but a massive gap – at least to the naked eye – was obvious.

Elana Franks was in charge out there. The centerfielder was a member of the team’s past four state championships. Amid the usual laughs, tears were sprinkled in as Calvary practiced for the first time since the death of the 17-year-old senior…
