A botched investigation made it impossible for prosecutors to file charges against Ethan Asbach, who was 19 years old at the time of the death of a Portland hiker on the Walupt Lake Trail on August 20, 2022.

A deputy from the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office was blamed for tainting evidence by County prosecuting Attorney Jonathan Meyer.

The first officer at the scene told a detective en route to the Walupt Lake Trail not to bother. He then moved the body of Aaron Christensen (49) out of the wilderness, using the dead man’s gear to do so.
