Palisades Residents Sue LADWP

Additional Coverage:

Pacific Palisades residents and businesses have filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) for alleged negligence during the Palisades Fire.

The lawsuit claims that LADWP failed to prepare adequately for the fire, leading to the loss of water pressure and a lack of water for firefighters to combat the blaze. The empty Santa Ynez Reservoir, a major water storage facility, is cited as a particular failure.

The plaintiffs, including families, individuals, and businesses, are seeking damages for property losses, alternative living expenses, and other related costs. They argue that the fire’s severity was exacerbated by LADWP’s unpreparedness.

LADWP has responded by stating that it was required to shut down the Santa Ynez Reservoir for safety reasons and that the water system meets all fire codes. The agency has declined to comment on the pending litigation.

The economic impact of the Palisades Fire is estimated to reach $40 billion, including both insured and uninsured losses. The investigation into the cause and spread of the fire is ongoing, with eight deaths currently linked to it.
