Extreme Cold Coming to US as Polar Vortex Dips

The United States is bracing for a deep freeze as the polar vortex, a large area of cold air, descends from Siberia. Nearly 300 million Americans will experience dangerously low temperatures.

Starting this weekend, the polar vortex will cause temperatures to plunge into the single digits in the northern US, with wind chills dropping into the negative teens. Temperatures will be 20-25 degrees below average.

On Sunday, temperatures will plummet into the teens in the Central Plains, with wind chills reaching -20s in the Northern Plains and single digits in the Central Plains.

The polar vortex will reach the Deep South on Monday, with temperatures dropping below freezing in Atlanta and wind chills in the 20s. Some areas in the Rockies, Plains, and Midwest will experience single-digit temperatures.

Record-breaking cold is expected in the Plains and East, with temperatures 25-30 degrees below average.

For the presidential inauguration on Monday in Washington, D.C., temperatures will be in the low 20s with wind chills in the single digits. This will be the coldest Inauguration Day in 40 years, surpassing President Reagan’s inauguration in 1985.
