A section of Sebastopol highway that has served for almost a year as an unsanctioned parking area for people living in recreational vehicles and cars is almost free of occupied vehicles now, without police having to tow anyone.
At least two RVs were still in a nearby Lucky’s shopping center parking lot Friday, and two vehicles owned by the same individual remain parked at the curb along Gravenstein Highway North near Hurlbut Avenue.
But Police Chief Ron Nelson said the people involved have made sincere efforts to comply with ordinances banning daytime RV parking in commercial districts, as well as separate regulations prohibiting any vehicle from remaining parked on any city street for more than 72 consecutive hours.
“Overall, I will say that I’m grateful to the people that were formerly housed there ― the ones that have been compliant and voluntarily took steps to help us address the situation,” Nelson said Friday. “I’m glad that it didn’t get to a point where we had to do mass towing, because that was in nobody’s best interest.”…
