Instagram Launches Video Editing App

Additional Coverage:

Instagram is releasing a new video editing tool called Edits, which will be available for pre-order on the Apple App Store.

Edits will allow users to create and edit videos up to 10 minutes long and share them to Instagram. It will feature artificial intelligence animation and other effects.

The app is expected to be fully available in February. Instagram is releasing Edits to compete with CapCut, another video editing app that was banned in the US along with TikTok.

Edits is not the same as CapCut, as it is owned by Instagram’s parent company, Meta. CapCut is owned by ByteDance, which is based in China.

The ban on TikTok and CapCut was part of a federal law signed by President Biden last year, which requires ByteDance to sell its US operations by January 19th. ByteDance failed to do so, resulting in the ban.

TikTok has since announced it is restoring service in the US, citing support from President-elect Trump. However, CapCut and other ByteDance-owned apps remain banned.
