Albany — New York Governor Kathy Hochul is proposing to make the automated work zone speed enforcement program permanent.
Launched in April 2023, it’s currently operating at a pilot program at a few sites, using radar to identify cars and trucks exceeding the speed limit, triggering a camera to capture a speeding vehicle and its license plate. The first violation resulting in a $50 fine, if another comes within 18 months, a $75 fine, and if there are three violations within an 18 month period, a $100 fine. Those fines coming by mail.
The Thruway Authority says they’re on board with making it permanent, as they say in two years, at their Thruway work sites, they’ve had more than 130,000 violations issued…
