Bird flu outbreak prompts public health warnings, safety measures in Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — According to the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM), bird flu has been detected in wildlife and poultry in Tennessee. The virus, also known as high pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), is considered a very contagious and often deadly disease of poultry that can wipe out flocks within a matter of days.

HPAI can spread quickly between birds, including birds that do not have signs of the disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it has been reported that the virus can impact certain mammalian species, including humans.
