Ice Chunk Crashes Through Ceiling, Couple Sues Airline

Inglewood, CA – A local couple is suing JetBlue for $1 million after a terrifying incident involving falling ice. Michael Reese and Leah Ferrarini claim a chunk of ice, roughly the size of a watermelon, plummeted from a passing JetBlue airliner and crashed through the roof of their home, landing directly above their bed.

The incident occurred in January as a JetBlue Airbus A321 en route from Los Angeles to New York flew overhead. The couple immediately contacted authorities, prompting an investigation by both local police and fire departments, along with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

According to the lawsuit, the couple now lives in fear of overhead aircraft, experiencing near-constant anxiety due to the frequency of planes in their neighborhood. They report suffering from insomnia and are considering moving out of what they once considered their “dream home.”

The lawsuit alleges the FAA investigation revealed a history of potable water system issues with the aircraft dating back six months, and that the same plane was suspected of a similar ice-dropping incident in Massachusetts months later. The suit further claims a misaligned valve flange was discovered during inspections, leading to a leak.

Reese and Ferrarini are accusing JetBlue of negligence and trespass, seeking damages for emotional distress, pain and suffering, medical expenses, and property damage. JetBlue denies liability, stating their actions were in accordance with regulations and industry standards. The airline is also seeking legal costs and attorney fees.
