State officials ask people to stay off of the roads after unprecedented winter storm

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – State officials have called the most recent winter storm a massive, unprecedented, statewide weather event. As crews work to fight the ice and freezing temperatures, they are pleading for people to stay off the roads.

Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry said they have more than 400 plows and 1,500 workers working 12-hour shifts. Their crews need time to scrape and brine.

“The reason those roads need to be clear is for first responders and emergency services,” McMurry said. “So that if somebody is having a medical emergency, the ambulance can get there and get somebody to the hospital and take care of them.”…
