( WJET/WFXP )– The Erie Water Authority has been awarded more than $6.5 million in funding to help improve its water infrastructure quality.
State Representatives Pat Harkins and Bob Merski announced the funding Wednesday to replace approximately 860 outdated service connections throughout the city.

These connections also include old galvanized pipes that have been linked to water mains which contain lead parts with funding being part of a previous effort to keep lead out of Erie’s water supply.
Half of the funding will come from a low-interest loan of $3,233,574 and the other from a grant worth $3,266,426 from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST).
