Several Louisville homeless shelters lack license, and some say the city was aware of the issue

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Several of the largest homeless shelters in Louisville that receive city funding do not have the required license to operate.

Last week WHAS11 was first to report that Wayside Christian Mission, which houses up to 640 people in all programs and 388 in its shelter, didn’t have a license for 16 months. Since then, the FOCUS team learned the Salvation Army on South Brook Street and the Volunteers of America Unity House on South Preston Street also lack a license.

“With the recent media attention about licenses for shelter, it caused us to pull out our file and see where we were in our compliance…and we realized that our license had lapsed,” said Maj. Mark Hunter with the Salvation Army. “So we immediately contacted the Codes and Regulations Department to see what we needed to do to get that application started.”…
