The right wintry mix of conditions has led to the formation of ice dunes on the beaches of Presque Isle State Park.
The dunes form when the air is freezing and the lake is near freezing, building up when ice washes ashore, along with wind blowing wave spray and snow.

The dunes serve an important purpose to slow down the erosion of the beaches. They’re a popular winter attraction for those visiting the park.
While ice dunes look like other-worldly mounds of ice and snow, they’re not solid and dangerous to walk on.
