I’ve been waiting for this announcement. It seems that keeping all of the trails open at Palo Duro Canyon has been tricky. However, on January 23, Palo Duro Canyon announced that all of the trails were finally open again.
Why Were The Trails Closed At Palo Duro Canyon State Park
Thanks to some summer rains we got in 2024, we found out why trails close and what it takes to close them. It isn’t just disastrous flooding or extremely dangerous weather. A decent heavy rain could be enough to close them down.
Several times we’ve seen announcements where just enough rain has fallen in the canyon to cause the trails to close. That rain mixes with the dirt to make mud. People hiking along those muddy trails can actually damage them. Not to mention it can also be dangerous for hikers.
The recent snowstorm we had dumped a lot of snow in the canyon. That snow has to melt, and then it needs to dry out enough to be considered safe for the trails and the hikers. This is why some of the trails have been closed for so long.
Thankfully, the announcement was made this week that all trails are open again. Time to plan a trip.
Is It A Good Time To Visit Palo Duro Canyon State Park?
I’ve hiked a lot in the canyon in the winter months, and honestly, I almost prefer it over the summer months. Sure, you’ll want to wear an extra layer or two, but it’s actually pretty nice…
