WMed researchers make groundbreaking discovery into cause of common kidney disease

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A research team at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) has made a significant discovery.

The team, led by Erik Larson, PhD, published results explaining how Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) is caused, a common kidney disease considered incurable.

ADPKD is lethal, and affects one in every 400 to 1,000 people, according to the National Institute of Health (NIH).
