Warmer days ahead as snow, ice begin to melt

(WPDE) — If you’re tired of the cold, below-normal conditions the area has been feeling for much of the month of January, next week brings a beacon of hope as warmer days are ahead.

Before then, Friday night will be another cold night with clear skies and calm, northwesterly winds. Lows at the beaches will reach the upper 20s to low 30s, and inland, lows will bottom out in the low 20s. A few communities that usually run colder may even drop into the teens.

All the progress Friday afternoon’s sunshine made with the snow and ice will stop Friday night into Saturday morning. Areas that didn’t evaporate Friday afternoon will refreeze overnight, causing black ice and slick spots on the roads Friday night into Saturday morning. Use extra caution on the roadways, especially in neighborhoods and on back roads.

This weekend begins a slow warming trend and stays dry with high pressure in command. Saturday’s highs reach the mid to upper 40s, so most of the snow and ice will melt in this time.

A few areas that don’t fully evaporate by Saturday night will refreeze overnight, mainly in shady spots in areas that saw the most ice and snow midweek. However, Saturday night into Sunday morning is one of our last very cold nights for at least the next week…
