Single shot fired during traffic stop involving stolen vehicle

CAPITAL REGION, NY (WRGB) — A shot was fired unintentionally Saturday during a traffic stop involving a stolen vehicle, according to Troy police.

On Saturday, January 25th, Troy Police Uniformed Officers were on patrol conducting a supplemental anti-crime detail. At around 1 pm these officers observed a vehicle that had been reported stolen Friday night in the City of Troy. The officers attempted to stop the vehicle and the suspect, the only occupant of the vehicle, fled in the vehicle. The officers pursued the vehicle, which ultimately crossed the Waterford bridge from Lansingburgh into Waterford.

While turning onto Division Street in Waterford the suspect vehicle struck a metal road sign and came to a stop nearby, according to police. A Troy PD officer exited his patrol vehicle and while approaching the suspect vehicle, the officer lost his footing and there was an unintentional discharge of the officer’s duty weapon. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident. The suspect and officer were both transported to local area hospitals for evaluation.
