01/26/2025: Milder! But Windy

The Latest Storm Tracker Forecast from Meteorologist Kevin Appleby:

Snow showers around this morning will result in minor accumulation and taper by the afternoon, outside of the Adirondacks where lake-effect snow will persist into this evening. Temperatures will be above normal for a few days, but the tradeoff is windy conditions and a more active weather pattern overall with several snow chances.

A cold front will swing through later today, pivoting the winds to be out of the southwest. By this evening, the southwesterly flow will cause the lake-effect band to lift well to our north, so dry conditions are on tap by tonight.

Temperatures are the highest they’ve been in a week this Sunday afternoon. Despite highs in the 30s, the breeze will make it feel 10-15 degrees colder. Hey – that’s still a better deal than temps below zero!

With drier weather taking hold, skies will clear out by early in the morning. Despite ideal radiational cooling conditions, I anticipate a south breeze keeping temperatures in the upper teens to around 20 degrees overnight.

Monday is the brightest and mildest day of the week! However, the winds will once again be a factor in the forecast, gusting up to 40 MPH. Temperatures may push 40 Albany-southbound within the Hudson Valley. Clouds will thicken from the north into Monday evening.

Scattered snow showers will develop ahead of a cold front Monday night, but I am more concerned about the increasing likelihood of a band of moderate to heavy snow drifting through our region into very early Tuesday morning. This squall would have the capability of producing a quick inch or so of snowfall, quickly causing road conditions to deteriorate. In some good news, the newest data seems to give this band more speed, so it looks to all but clear the News10 viewing area before the hear of the morning commute Tuesday morning, especially Albany-northwest.

Temperatures Tuesday peak in the morning close to freezing, but will quickly fall in wake of a strong cold front back into the teens and low 20s by the afternoon. Additionally, winds will again be gusty, so wind chills by the afternoon will be in the single digits. While Tuesday is mainly dry after that quick shot of morning snow, another weak system looks to bring light but widespread snow to the region Wednesday. That system will quickly warm us up above freezing in most areas. Precip is still expected to be entirely snow due to no shortage of sub-freezing air aloft.

We quickly cool down for Thursday with highs in the teens and low 20s to go along with a breeze. Friday, meanwhile, has trended significantly warmer over the past 24 hours as guidance has indicated the cold shot of air exits the region much quicker. Mostly cloudy, especially down south, for Saturday as we keep an eye on a storm signal for a wintry mix Saturday night into Sunday. Sleet and freezing rain are possibilities with this potential storm, precip types that have been largely absent from our forecast so far this winter.
