Kalamazoo man gets at least 27 years in prison for drug charges

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Kalamazoo man has been sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for drug charges.

Andrew Birge, the acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan , announced that Michael Warren Smith Jr. had been sentenced to 327 months in prison for possessing and intending to sell methamphetamines, fentanyl and cocaine.

Prosecutors say police searched two of Smith’s Kalamazoo properties on Oct. 11, 2023 — a house on Elmwood Street and an apartment on West Main Street. Between the two, investigators seized nearly six pounds of meth, nearly 700 grams of fentanyl, at least 470 grams of cocaine, five loaded firearms and other evidence of drug trafficking.

The Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team and the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety worked together on the investigation.
