Salt Lake City, Utah – A 20-year-old cold case has been cracked, leading to the arrest of a suspect in the stabbing death of Jason Royter. Royter, 33, was found dead in his Salt Lake City area home on August 6, 2005.
The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office investigated the homicide for nearly a decade before turning it over to their cold case unit. Another decade of diligent work, combined with advancements in investigative techniques, finally yielded a breakthrough.
53-year-old Mark Munoz was arrested last Thursday and charged with murder. DNA evidence collected at the crime scene reportedly matched a sample taken from Munoz.
Locating Munoz proved challenging for detectives. He is reportedly unhoused and has limited contact with family and friends.
Sheriff Rosie Rivera expressed her hope that the arrest brings some peace to Royter’s family. She stressed that the investigation remains active as detectives seek further evidence. Rivera reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring justice for Jason Royter.
