Sarasota County to provide more employee cell phones after public records lawsuit settled

Sarasota County will issue more government-owned cellphones to employees to make sure work-related text messages they send — including by high-level officials — are properly archived and available for public inspection as required by open government laws. The move comes after a lawsuit exposed potential Florida Sunshine Law violations and followed initial resistance by county officials over the potential cost of making sure public records were properly retained and accessible.
