Omdurman Market Attack Kills Dozens

A devastating attack on the Sabrein Market in Omdurman, Sudan, has claimed the lives of 54 people and injured at least 158, according to health officials. The attack, attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, is the latest tragedy in Sudan’s ongoing civil war.

Government spokesperson Khalid al-Aleisir condemned the attack, noting the high number of women and children among the casualties. He called the attack a criminal act and a violation of international humanitarian law.

The Sudanese Doctors Syndicate reported that a mortar shell landed near Al-Naw Hospital, where many of the victims were taken. The hospital is struggling with shortages of medical personnel and supplies. Reports indicate many of the deceased were women and children.

Last week, a similar RSF attack on a hospital in El Fasher killed approximately 70 people. The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 28,000 deaths and displaced millions. Famine is spreading through parts of the country, forcing families to extreme measures for survival.

The conflict has been marked by atrocities, including ethnically motivated killings and rape, according to the United Nations and human rights organizations. The International Criminal Court is investigating alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. The US has accused the RSF and associated groups of genocide.

Recent military gains have shifted the balance of power in the war, with the RSF losing control of key areas, including parts of Khartoum, Omdurman, and eastern and central provinces. The military has also retaken control of Wad Medani and the country’s largest oil refinery.
