Is It Dementia? 8 Early Warning Signs

Additional Coverage:

Worried about dementia? Many of us are, especially as we get older. It’s important to know the real symptoms, which go beyond simple forgetfulness.

Dementia affects memory, language, and thinking, impacting daily life. Alzheimer’s is the most common form, but others exist, like Lewy body dementia and frontotemporal dementia. A new study estimates 42% of men and women will develop dementia.

Early dementia signs can be surprising. Vision changes like trouble judging distance or seeing colors are one potential indicator.

Frequent nightmares are also linked to a higher risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Some researchers believe these dreams could be an early warning sign, allowing for earlier intervention.

A diminished sense of smell has been connected to neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. It’s another early symptom to be aware of.

Changes in behavior are also important. Apathy, increased anxiety, irritability, and social withdrawal can be signs of dementia.

Memory loss, especially short-term, is a common symptom. Forgetting important dates, repeating questions, and relying heavily on reminders are key indicators. Difficulty finding the right words can also be a sign, particularly with frontotemporal dementia.

Trouble with familiar tasks is another red flag. This might include difficulty following recipes, managing bills, or driving to familiar places.

Poor judgment, like making bad financial decisions or neglecting personal grooming, can also be an early sign. Vulnerability to scams may also indicate a higher risk.

Finally, a sudden onset of depression later in life can be a warning sign. Depression can be both a symptom and a precursor to dementia.
