Albuquerque, NM – A courtroom erupted in chaos Friday morning when two men attacked a murder suspect during a hearing. The suspect, Alexander Ortiz, was appearing before a judge when the victim’s uncle, Carlos Lucero, and another man, Pete Ysasi, stormed the gallery.
Video footage shows Lucero punching Ortiz, followed by Ysasi joining the attack. Court officers and other family members intervened, but the situation escalated into a brawl. A corrections officer attempting to break up the fight was also punched.
Lucero reportedly told deputies he attacked Ortiz because Ortiz “killed my niece like a coward.” He added that the attack “was worth every moment.” Both Lucero and Ysasi now face assault charges, including battery on a peace officer.
Court officials say the incident underscores the need for strong courtroom security. Katina Watson, CEO of the Second Judicial District Court, praised the corrections officer’s quick response, saying he “did everything he could to ensure the safety of everyone.”
Ortiz is accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Alianna Farfan, on January 11, 2024. Police reports indicate a history of domestic abuse between Ortiz and Farfan.
Ortiz is also a suspect in the January 17, 2024 murder of 35-year-old Nicole Maldonado. He faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and tampering with evidence.
