For Northern Minnesota communities, February 5 marks a day of remembrance. On this date in 1924, the Milford Mine near Crosby became the site of the worst mining disaster in state history when 41 miners lost their lives in a sudden flood.

A Normal Day Turns Tragic

That February afternoon started like any other at the Milford Mine, where workers dug for iron ore used to strengthen steel. The mine sat between two lakes, with its main shaft reaching 200 feet deep. Workers were busy at the 165-foot to 175-foot level when the first warning signs appeared.
