Local Writer Picks Surprise Burger Winner

Additional Coverage:

As a Midwesterner, Culver’s has always been my go-to burger joint. But after hearing so much hype about In-N-Out, I decided a taste test was in order. I recently tried both, ordering comparable meals to see how they stacked up.

My first stop was In-N-Out in California. The busy restaurant had a classic red and white design.

I ordered a cheeseburger combo with a chocolate shake. The total was about $13.

The burger was good, with a thin patty and plenty of toppings. The real star was the tangy sauce.

The fresh-cut fries were also a winner, perfectly salted and full of potato flavor. The shake, however, was unremarkable.

Back home, I visited Culver’s and ordered the deluxe value basket, substituting a chocolate shake for the usual soda. This brought my total to about $13.

The ButterBurger, while tasty, was overloaded with lettuce. The beefy flavor shone through, but I needed to add ketchup.

The crinkle-cut fries were crispy but lacked flavor. The chocolate shake was a bit of a letdown.

In the end, In-N-Out surprised me. The burger sauce and fresh fries were the deciding factors.

While Culver’s ButterBurger is satisfying, In-N-Out takes the crown. I’ll definitely be visiting again when I get the chance.
