SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Springfield Police Department (SPD) has announced the death of a former K9 officer.
According to a release from SPD, retired K9 officer Charlie died at home on Thursday, Jan. 30 at the age of 12, surrounded by his family.
K9 Charlie served the department with Sgt. Michael Karnes for six years before retiring in 2020.

SPD says Charlie, a Malinois from Denmark, joined the force in 2014 and enjoyed working, whether tracking bad guys or searching buildings and anything in between.
“My favorite thing about Charlie was his work ethic and I will miss him,” Karnes said. “Charlie was methodical, intelligent, and I always knew he would give his best effort. Charlie was the best partner I have ever had. The bond I had with him, unless you are a handler, is hard to describe in words.”…
