High-ranking SC prisons employee gave inmates confidential info in exchange for cash, prosecutors say

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A former high-ranking officer with the South Carolina prison system is being accused of giving highly sensitive information to inmates in exchange for money, according to state prosecutors.

Leon Morrell appeared in court in Columbia Thursday morning for a bond hearing. A judge granted him a $50,000 bond with a 10% cash option.

The case stems from an ongoing state grand jury investigation into prison corruption within the South Carolina Department of Corrections. The allegations against Morrell date back to January 2024.
