Kendrick Lamar, fresh off five Grammy wins, will headline the Super Bowl LIX halftime show. The Super Bowl stage is a coveted spot, but some musicians have declined the opportunity.
The NFL has faced criticism for past halftime show choices, but many top artists have actually turned down the gig. While recent years have seen successful performances from artists like Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Usher, Dr. Dre, and The Weeknd, several big names have said no.
Adele reportedly declined the 2017 show, stating it wasn’t about the music and didn’t fit her style. The NFL and Pepsi, however, claimed no formal offer was made. Lady Gaga ultimately performed that year.
Pink, known for her aerial stunts and hit songs, turned down the 2019 halftime show. She cited the intense scrutiny performers face and her support of Colin Kaepernick, who protested racial injustice by kneeling during the national anthem.
Jay-Z, who produced the 2020 show with Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, revealed he had previously declined an offer. He was asked to perform with Kanye West and Rihanna, but refused because he felt the NFL shouldn’t dictate who he collaborated with.
Taylor Swift reportedly declined the 2023 show to focus on re-recording her albums and prepare for her Eras Tour. Rihanna performed instead. Swift did attend the 2023 Super Bowl to support her boyfriend.
Big Boi of Outkast revealed that André 3000 declined a Super Bowl halftime offer because the NFL wanted to shorten their songs. Big Boi performed at the Super Bowl in 2019 without André 3000.
Cardi B declined the 2019 show due to her support for Colin Kaepernick, but acknowledged the financial sacrifice involved. She defended her decision to perform at Super Bowl parties, stating she would benefit from the NFL if they benefited from her.
Dolly Parton has reportedly been offered the Super Bowl halftime show multiple times. She cited scheduling conflicts and feeling her production wasn’t large enough for the event.
