Lucky California man steps forward to claim $2.3 million Mega Millions jackpot prize

CATHEDRAL CITY, CA – A lucky California man is starting the year with a multi-million-dollar windfall after nearly hitting the Mega Millions jackpot.

Jose Hernandez Guerra, who purchased his ticket at an ARCO station in Cathedral City, Riverside County, matched all five numbers in the Sept. 6 drawing, missing only the Mega number. His prize totaled $2.3 million, California Lottery officials announced Thursday.

Unlike other states with fixed secondary prizes, California’s pari-mutuel system increased Guerra’s winnings beyond the standard $1 million payout.
