A former treasurer of a fire department in Oneida County is accused of stealing $309,000 from the department.
Jonnell Rose was arrested and arraigned in Vernon Town Court, charged with the alleged theft from the Vernon Center Fire Department. In a statement from the state comptroller’s office, the Oneida County district attorney’s office and the New York State Police, Rose is accused of stealing the money between May 2018 and May 2024.
“Rose wrote fire department checks to cash and deposited checks purportedly written to various legitimate fire department vendors into his personal accounts. He also allegedly deposited checks intended for the department into his personal bank account,” the statement read in part. “A forensic examination revealed that Rose made numerous personal purchases and payments, including crypto currency transactions, credit card payments, and cash withdrawals with the allegedly stolen funds.”…
