The tranquil weather expected over the weekend won’t last very long. A return to stormy conditions is in the forecast for the middle of next week and this time, though the Bay Area is likely to see substantial rain, Southern California may end up with some of the heaviest precipitation.

Sunny and stable weather this weekend
Beginning on Friday, a ridge of high pressure will build over the Eastern Pacific, extending eastward towards California over the weekend. That will result in much calmer weather extending into early next week.
However, this building ridge of high pressure will be accompanied by a chilly air mass. Despite ample sunshine, daytime temperatures will struggle to break out of the 50s across the Bay Area over the weekend and into next week. The mornings will be cold as well, with some of the more sheltered interior locations dropping into the upper 20s and urban areas falling back into the upper 30s and low 40s.
New storm on Wednesday
By Wednesday of next week, a new storm will develop over the Eastern Pacific and quickly move towards the California coast. The exact track and intensity of the storm system remains in question, but forecast models are in agreement that heavy rain and snow will impact a large part of the state on Wednesday and Thursday.
Unlike the storm systems of the past week, this one will extend down the coast towards Southern California, offering both a blessing and curse for the rain-starved region.
