California Bill Moves to Ban Single-Use Plastic Bottles in State Agencies

California is taking a major step toward reducing plastic waste with Assembly Bill (AB) 2648, introduced by Assemblymember Steve Bennett. The bill aims to phase out the purchase and sale of single-use plastic bottles by state agencies, reinforcing California’s commitment to sustainability. The legislation does not apply to consumers but seeks to set a precedent for waste reduction.

“It is time that state government models the change we ask of everyone else,” said Assemblymember Bennett. “California has the purchasing power to show that this transition is feasible.”

Environmental advocates support the bill, emphasizing its impact. “Less than 30% of plastic bottles are recycled,” noted Jenn Engstrom, CALPIRG’s State Director. Alison Waliszewski of The 5 Gyres Institute highlighted that plastic pollution is widespread, contaminating food, water, and ecosystems.
