“Distraction thefts typically involve suspect creating a scenario to divert a victim’s attention, allowing them or their accomplices to steal personal belongings or valuables,” Torrance police said. “Common tactics include asking for directions, spilling a drink or creating a scene that requires assistance.”

Officials provided four steps for residents to protect themselves:

  1. Stay aware: Always be aware of your surroundings and the people around you, especially in crowded places
  2. Be cautious: If approached by strangers asking for help or directions, maintain distance and be cautious before engaging
  3. Secure your belongings: Keep personal items close and secure, and avoid leaving valuables unattended, even for a moment
  4. Use technology: Use anti-theft devices or security apps to monitor belongings
