AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Currently at United Supermarkets in the area the cheapest eggs are their Grade A Large Eggs for $5.99. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics Grade A Large Eggs were $2.86 in 2022.
With the higher price of eggs and many causes of Avian Influenza being seen across the country, some are thinking about farming their eggs with a backyard flock.
“With the bird flu that’s going around, giant egg farms have to euthanize, sometimes upwards of a million birds in their flocks. It takes a chick 20 weeks to become old enough to be a laying hen,” said Joshua Davis owner of JC Acre. “So the egg shortage is basically what we’re seeing, is all of these birds having to be put down, and the 20-week gap from chicks producing eggs. And so that’s kind of what’s creating the problem right now.”
