PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police officers in Rhode Island have issued more than 7,500 violations in the past three years for excessively dark window tint, which is prohibited under state law, a Target 12 analysis has found.
Rhode Island law mandates that any vehicle registered in the state must have windows with at least 70% visible light transmission, or VLT, meaning 70% of light must pass through the glass. The lower the percentage, the darker the tint.
Most new cars come with windows at 70% VLT, which gives the appearance of no tint at all. Larger vehicles, such as trucks, vans and SUVs, can have rear side and back windows tinted at a darker level. Windshields on all vehicles cannot be tinted except for a six-inch strip at the top…
