EUGENE, Ore. — Frigid temperatures across the Willamette Valley mean there may be an ice storm toward the end of the week. Local leaders are urging the public to stay off the roads during that time as travel will be dangerous.
With the potential ice storm approaching, the City of Eugene Public Works and the Eugene School District 4J are getting ready to handle the expected slippery and freezing conditions. With the city staffed and ready to hit the roads the minute they freeze over, Public Affairs Manager for Public Works Marion Suitor Barnes said that fortunately there has not been rain to prevent de-icing efforts ahead of time.
“The fact that it’s dry really allows us to do some preventative work. Of course, we always have our crews that are on standby just in case something does happen,” Barnes said. “We are ready to go out in the mornings or even at night if it does happen.”
The Eugene School District 4J is keeping a close eye on the weather which ultimately dictates whether or not schools will be closed. Communications Director Kelly McIver said they are determined to keep the schools open but are not above closing the schools if conditions are too bad…
