Kohl’s Department Stores to Close 27 Underperforming Locations
Kohl’s is the latest department store to struggle in the current economy. Despite efforts to revamp store layouts and change leadership, sales continue to decline. The company recently announced the closure of 27 underperforming stores by April, along with a 10% reduction in headquarters staff.
Affected states include Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah and Virginia. California will see the most closures, with 10 stores shutting down. However, the company still maintains a significant presence in the state.
While some stores are closing, Kohl’s is offering affected employees severance packages and the opportunity to apply for other positions within the company.
This isn’t the only department store chain facing difficulties. Macy’s also recently announced store closures.
Kohl’s has seen 11 consecutive quarters of declining sales, and its stock price has dropped significantly. These 27 closures represent less than 3% of Kohl’s approximately 1,150 stores nationwide.
