STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, in an address from the floor of the House of Representatives, focused on the dedication, brave acts and courage demonstrated by the “Black Angels” — nurses who answered the call of duty at Sea View Hospital 70 years ago.
“As the nation celebrates Black History Month, I rise to honor all the Staten Island Black Angels 70 years ago when tuberculosis plagued our nation,” she noted. “This highly contagious, deadly disease led many nurses to quit, and there was shortness of staff.”
