California Couple Airlifted to Safety by Honolulu Fire Department After Injuries on Sacred Falls Trail

A couple’s hike on the Sacred Falls Trail in Punaluu, Hawaii, took an unexpected turn on Sunday, according to the Honolulu Fire Department. The hikers, a husband and wife from California both in their 60’s, found themselves in need of rescue after they began their trail journey and sustained multiple injuries within the first 15 minutes that left them unable to continue without assistance. Responding to a 911 call made at 1:13 p.m., HFD dispatched six units staffed by 17 personnel to the scene, according to a statement obtained by the Honolulu Fire Department’s official website.

The rescue operation unfolded quickly after the first unit arrived at 1:37 p.m., initiating a ground search while other teams set up a nearby landing zone for the aerial part of the extraction. Navigating the rugged terrain, rescuers located the couple and by 2:08 p.m., had arrived at their side halfway through the trail.
