Joint Effort by Honolulu Fire and Ocean Safety Departments Saves Swimmer at China Walls

Quick response and teamwork from the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) and the Honolulu Ocean Safety Department saved the life of a 20-year-old swimmer near China Walls in Hawaii Kai. Last Saturday, a call came into HFD at 6:11 p.m., as detailed in an official report from the Honolulu Fire Department’s website, about a swimmer who had gone missing after diving into the water with friends and had failed to resurface.

According to the HFD, their first responders arrived on the scene just six minutes after the alarm, at 6:17 p.m. They immediately took command, and search efforts began right away. The HFD’s decisive action and the assistance of the Ocean Safety Department’s jet ski were critical in locating and retrieving the young man. The HFD release stated that “HFD personnel made found the missing swimmer at 6:22 p.m.” and worked together to bring him safely back to shore…
