Foods to Grow New Brain Cells After 50

Additional Coverage:

Maintaining brain health is crucial, especially as we age. While some cognitive decline is a natural part of getting older, certain foods can help.

Neuroscientist Robert Love and a Harvard doctor, Dr. Shintani, recently highlighted three powerful brain foods. They emphasize the importance of BDNF, a protein that helps grow new brain cells.

Blueberries are packed with antioxidants that fight free radicals, protecting brain cells from damage. The anthocyanins in blueberries also stimulate BDNF production.

Turmeric, particularly when combined with black pepper, is another key food. Its active compound, curcumin, reduces brain inflammation and also boosts BDNF.

Finally, flaxseeds and fatty fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, improve communication between brain cells. These foods have been linked to slower cognitive decline and protection against diseases like Alzheimer’s. Like blueberries and turmeric, they also increase BDNF levels.
