More Denny’s Closing Than We Thought

Additional Coverage:

Local Denny’s diners are facing closures, with the company announcing a higher number than initially projected. Last fall, the chain planned to close 150 underperforming locations by 2025.

However, a recent update reveals a significant increase. As many as 178 restaurants could close this year. This follows 88 closures already completed in 2024.

The company cites expiring leases, aging buildings, and shifting demographics as reasons for the closures. Many of these locations are nearly 30 years old and no longer profitable.

Denny’s leadership hopes these closures will allow franchisees to invest in remaining restaurants and new ventures. They plan to open between 25 and 40 new restaurants, including some Keke’s Breakfast Cafes, a chain Denny’s acquired in 2022.

While the specific locations slated for closure haven’t been released, Denny’s stated it does not provide advance notice. The company says it works directly with owners and employees when closures are necessary. There are currently over 1,300 Denny’s locations nationwide, with a high concentration in California, Florida, and Texas.
