“Majority” of voters support more taxes to sustain California public transit agencies: transit board

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 14, 2025 – A recent poll conducted by Oakland-based EMC Research indicates that a majority of Bay Area voters support a proposed transit funding measure aimed at preventing major service cuts to BART, San Francisco Muni, Caltrain, and AC Transit, according to the MTC.

The poll, presented to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), found that 54% of voters in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, and San Mateo counties would approve a half-cent sales tax to sustain transit services.

State senators Scott Wiener of San Francisco and Jesse Arreguín of Berkeley have introduced Senate Bill 63, which would authorize placing the measure on the November 2026 ballot. However, support remains below the two-thirds majority needed for MTC to move forward.
